USMS Approves New Tampa Bay Masters Swim Team
January 29, 2009
Local masters swimmers today announced the formation of Tampa Bay Aquatic Masters, a new masters swim team sanctioned by United States Masters Swimming and dedicated to bringing and maintaining a self-governed and team-managed swim team in Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay Aquatic Masters was organized by masters swimmers who have swam together on collegiate and other masters teams and competed in various events.
The team named three officers to help organize and manage critical operational and financial responsibilities while other team volunteers coordinate and execute recruitment and communications tasks. TBAM appointed head coach, Gary Goodner, with more than 35 years of experience coaching swimming champions at age-group, high school, collegiate and masters levels. A former Olympian, his résumé includes coaching the Puerto Rico National Champions and Florida State Champions. He also serves as head coach of the Tampa Palms Country Club branch of Tampa Bay Aquatics. Merit Greaves, President, is a USMS All-American, multiple USMS Top Ten honoree and NCAA champion who also shares with her 1984-85 University of South Florida women's swim teammates the honor of winning the university's first national sports championship. Ann von Spiegelfeld, Secretary, an avid triathlete for 20 years has successfully completed three Ironman events, swam competitively as a youth and was an All-American high school swimmer. Steve Knauss, Treasurer, dedicates much of his time out of the pool as a referee for youth and adult soccer. He's among only 150 State Level Referees (Grade 6) and supports Hillsborough County high school soccer games and various youth and adult leagues in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties.
The officers and coach represent a diverse team of adult men and women athletes including competitive swimmers, fitness swimmers and triathletes who together help all swimmers improve fitness and training goals and actively support healthy living through friendship and sport.
